Lombardia is Italy’s wealthiest region, but it remains best known for its famous lakes—Lake Como, Lake Maggiore and Lake Garda. Surrounded by mountains, these lakes are like perfect gems, providing an ideal holiday setting. Several major cities are nearby, including: Milan, Bergamo, Brescia, and Cremona—home of the violin.

Lake Garda is the biggest of the Pre-Alpine lakes and Italy’s largest, with a surface area of 370 square kilometers and a perimeter of 162 km. The northern lake is long and narrow, bordered on the west by high, steep banks and on the east by the ridge of Monte Baldo—a natural botanical garden.

The southern lake is wide with low banks. It’s divided by the narrow Sirmione peninsula where hot springs, coming directly from the lake bottom, are channelled into an exclusive spa—Le Terme di Sirmione—on the border between Lombardy and Veneto.

The beauty of the surrounding mountains combines with a mild climate and the Mediterranean’s abundance — vineyards, olive groves and citrus orchards — to make Lake Garda one Italy’s most thriving holiday centres.

The east side of Garda caters to European sport and winsurfing fans, while the west side between Salò and Gargnano is a more exclusive area called Riviera Bresciana, It features many parks, gardens, and large country houses built around the wealthy towns of Salò, Gardone Riviera, Fasano and Maderno. The largest and liveliest town in the south is Desenzano, close to the Sirmione peninsula.

Regular ferry services and numerous roads link all the lakeside centres. Trains frequent Lake Garda, and two excellent roads run along the east and the west sides of the lake. Located half way between Milan and Venice, the lake offers a beautiful base for exploring the cities of art of Veneto and Lombardy, and the hills and wineries around Verona. It’s a place to experience Italian life at its best.
