Villas rentals: Capri
Capri
is located about 5 kilometres off the Sorrento peninsula and divides
the
Bay of Naples
from the Bay of Salerno. Measuring about 6 km by 2.5 km, the island’s
diversity makes it a delightful holiday destination. We have several villas
available on Capri, including Villa la Pineta.
Capri's main arrival port of Marina Grande is on the north side, and visitors
must catch a cable tram, taxi, or bus to reach the main Capri township.
Capri’s quaint narrow lanes are lined by fine shops, and the Piazzetta
has many the fashionable cafes. Continuing south, you will arrives at
Marina
Piccola and the Faraglioni rocks—a popular spot for wealthy travellers
to anchor their yachts.
The dramatic coastline on this side of the coast makes our Villa
la Pineta and I Faraglioni (accommodating up to 12 people) so popular.
On Capri’s east side sits the Villa of Tiberius and the famous Tiberius’
leap. On the west, the road climbs up the cliffside for several kilometres
to reach the quiet village of Anacapri. From there, it’s a short walk
or chair lift to Monte Solaro. In remarkable contrast to Capri and its busy
port, the centre of the island is lush, with dense forests and ferny valleys.
Continuing on to Punta Carena at the southwestern tip of the Capri, you
will find Torre della Guardia constructed in a unused lighthouse. Ask us
for details.
Activities: Capri will keep you busy!
Food & Wine
Fior di latte: fresh cheese resembling mozzarella, made of cow milk from
the nearby Monti Lattari (Milk Mountains). Of course, true mozzarella is
made from buffalo and cow milk and comes from the plains South of Salerno,
towards Paestum and Battipaglia. Fior di latte has a rich creamy colour
and is often found in the shape of treccia.
Provola: Smoked fior di latte, can be enjoyed on its own or in parmigiana
di melenzane, or even on pizzas for a rich, satisfying flavour.
Fresh caciotta, served plain or stuffed with basil or rocket leaves, are
made daily. Many fresh cheeses are often served wrapped in lemon leaves
and grilled. Local caseifici—dairy producers—often have a shop
front open to the public, while they distribute their products to the local
delicatessens (salumeria).
Vegetables: The vegetables of this area have a depth of flavour which is
rarely found elsewhere. Try the large Sorrento tomatoes, with their distinctive
pink colour and thick flesh. They are best served on their own with the
local olive oil or in the Caprese fashion—with fior di latte or mozzarella,
garnished with local dark basil.
Eggplant (or aubergines) are a staple of the local cuisine. Everyone should
try the region’s classic parmigiana di melanzane, but we also think
you’ll love the delicious polpettine di melanzane—eggplant patties
deep fried or baked, or the involtini—deep fried slices of eggplant
that are rolled and stuffed with fior di latte and basil leaves.
Pasta: Try the ravioli capresi, made of egg pasta, stuffed with local fresh
cheese.
Fish and seafood: The bounty of the sea is extraordinary. Pezzogna, sarago,
orata and spigola are caught locally, and served fresh. The locals love
their seafood to be served all’acqua pazza—which is a light
broth made with oil, garlic, parsley and pomodorino (a small tomato grown
in the mountains). A typical dish of the Peninsula is totani e patate, a
unique casserole of potatoes and totani (a dark member of the calamari family).
Wines: Many
wines from Campania are worthy—and perfect with the local cuisine:
from the Amalfi area, Tramonti, Furore and Gragnano; from Irpinia near Naples,
Taurasi, Aglianico, Greco di Tufo, Fiano and Falanghina.
Desserts: The local cakes and pastries desserts are simply stunning. Try
the torta caprese, the delizia al limone, (lemon delight), and the baba
soaked in limoncello.
